USC is Grand Champion in Square Off - CVC Law Debates

After squaring off with sixteen top law schools in the country in fifteen episodes aired in fourteen weeks, Square Off- CVC Law Debates crowned University of San Carlos Law Debating Team the Grand Champion in the Grand Finals of the program’s Season 5.  The competition was aired live over the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) on Friday, September 7, 2012 and was held at the Dolphy Theatre of ABS-CBN in Quezon City.

For this debate, two teams take on the Supreme Court's ruling granting Danding Cojuangco shares in San Miguel Corporation on the proposition, “Let It Be Resolved That:  The Supreme Court Decision Granting Eduardo ‘Danding’ Conjuangco, Jr. SMCShares Should Be Reopened.” Arguing for the affirmative side is the Ateneo de Manila University composed of Michael Victoriano, Eduardo Macabulos and Kristel Tiu.  Taking on the negative side is University of San Carlos composed of sophomore law students Bandanaira Seno, Athena Plaza and Alvin Clyde Gregorio.

The Board of Judges consisted of CVC Law name partners Atty. Sylvette Tankiang and Atty. Bienvenido Somera Jr., the equally prominent Atty. Ramon Esguerra, IBP President Atty. Roan Libarios and CVC Law name partner and former Solicitor General and Ombudsman, Atty. Simeon Marcelo.  In a unanimous decision, the Board of Judges declared USC Law the winner, with Athena Plaza taking home the Best Speaker distinction as well.

To qualify for the finals, the USC Law also defeated the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Manila in the Elimination Round, the Ateneo de Davao University in the quarter-finals, and the University of Santo Tomas in the semi-finals.
